Float Competition takes to the Streets

Stilt walkers, circus tents, and a clown-faced fire truck made for a visual extravaganza and an exciting competition at this year’s homecoming parade. In past years, the field hockey team, plus a group of elementary school youngsters, has come out on top, boasting miniature mummies and Egyptian cats. However, the seniors were a force to be reckoned with this year, riding atop a decked out fire truck loaned by Mr. Derek Coley.
While many clubs and teams made valiant efforts to show their pride during the Saturday morning parade, it seems that Coley, who also designs the field hockey float each year, is the magic touch when it comes to the competition.
“I built floats for Anheuser-Busch and for the city of New York,” said Mr. Coley, whose daughter Leslie Coley is not only a senior, but also a varsity field hockey player. When asked whose side he stood on for the float competition, Mr.  Coley replied, “I favor my six seniors on the field hockey team.”
The field hockey girls were confident in this year’s float, which included stilt walkers, a multicolored tent, and dozens of flags.
“I don’t think anyone else will have this idea” said sophomore Rachel Aiken, “We’re hoping, considering last year we lost to little kids with beanie babies on their heads.”
Sophomore Diana Pluma added, “We think that we are going to win because Mr. Coley even said it’s, like, too good for the parade!”
By Friday morning, the excitement over the field hockey float had made its way to the seniors.
“From what I’ve heard of the field hockey float, ours doesn’t really compare,” said senior Sydney Pritchard, “Ours is really unique, though, and I think the field hockey people should watch out for the little kids because little kids in clown costumes equals cute, and field hockey girls in clown costumes equals what were you thinking! And we have a mixed bag of goodies, so be prepared!”
Despite an injured stilt walker and a limited amount of candy, the field hockey girls were once again victorious.
