The Pink Ribbon comes to U. City

The U.City volleyball tournament against Ritenour on Oct. 8 was festooned in bright pink ribbons to support the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Chad Kish, athletic director, wanted all of our teams to participate because he wanted them to do something positive.
Not only did the volleyball team support pink, but other teams did as well. Throughout the day, players passed out pink ribbons, put up posters, and prepared an immense ribbon to post in the gym, all in the name of breast cancer awareness. This would be the first time that U.City ever hosted such an event.
“The team wanted to have a service project that would make a big impact, and they wanted to collaborate with another school to make it happen,” said Coach Aboussie.
Throughout the game, facts about breast cancer were announced to the crowd, including that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. according to the American Cancer Society, and that an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the U.S this year.
“It supported a good cause, and I learned things that I might have not known about breast cancer,” said senior Lakia Parks.
The air was electric with the sound of fans cheering on the players. In the end though, Ritenour pulled ahead and won with a score of 25-15.
The team may have lost, but they won by raising awareness about an important issue.
“I thought this was a really good game…we did it for a good cause,” said senior Lakia Parks. “I know for a fact that we can beat Ritenour and I wish we could play them again.”
Aboussie hopes to use this accomplishment as a springboard to include a fund raiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and would also like to honor the survivors of breast cancer next year.
