On March 3, at Parkway Central High School, nine U. City students performed solos for judges, during the MSHSA District Solo Competition. At competitions such as these, musicians and singers are rated on a scale one through six. Julian Bowens-Robinson and Destiny Moore both received ones. Jamoni Richardson, Phoebe Thoroughman, Johanna Hill, Zahrya Metcalfe, Biyedgi Frango all received two ratings, and Reggie Lee all received a three rating.

For all the artists except Moore, this was their first time at Districts. Moore, a junior returned for the second year in a row. However after taking part in orchestra for eight years, that may be expected.

Moore had been to districts and state previously, but this was her first time performing a solo.

“I was very anxious,” said Moore. “Since I’ve already done it before I wasn’t as nervous, but doing it by myself made me anxious.”

Performing in front of people individually, even though some people love the feeling, can be extremely nerve racking for others.

“When you play you don’t feel you did as good. You hear something different than what the judges are hearing.”
